For the second time, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34, of the Philippines and Amir Khan, 24, of Singapore had their face-off during the kick-off press conference for “ONE: Conquest of Champions” on November 20, 2018 at the City of Dreams Manila in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The event was hosted by Mitch “The Dragon” Chilson, 40, a former ONE Championship athlete who is now a commentator.
Folayang and Khan had their first face-off during the open workout at the Victory Sports Tower in Diliman, Quezon City, Metro Manila on November 16, 2018. They are set to co-headline “ONE: Conquest of Champions” for the vacant ONE Lightweight World Championship.
Right after the “ONE: Conquest of Champions” press conference, I asked Chilson about his thoughts on the upcoming match between Khan, his former Evolve MMA teammate, and Folayang, the hometown hero who is representing Team Lakay of Baguio City, Philippines. The MMA fighter-turned-commentator referred to the “ONE: Conquest of Champions” co-headliners as “the old lion versus the new lion.”
“We got the power striking of Amir Khan versus the technical striking of Eduard Folayang,” Chilson told me. He added that the recent training of the Team Lakay fighter at the famous Jackson-Wink MMA training facility in the United States adds an interesting element to the dynamic of the bout.
“It’s gonna be very interesting,” Chilson said. “I think it’s gonna go the distance. I really think it’s gonna go the full five rounds.”
“Eduard Folayang, I wanna see how he could keep up with the speed of Amir Khan,” Chilson continued. “I think Amir Khan might be one step ahead of him.”
Folayang reigned as the ONE Lightweight World Champion from November 11, 2016 to November 10, 2017. He was dethroned by Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila.
On September 28, 2018, Nguyen vacated the ONE Lightweight World Championship because he is unable to defend it due to an injury. He is still the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion.
“But no doubt, Eduard Folayang in Manila, on his home turf fighting for a belt…” Chilson noted. “He has always put all of his best performances here, except the last time, the last time didn’t help, but I really think Eduard Folayang is gonna put on a great show. He has a tough, tough call up now against my former teammate Amir Khan.”
