Brazil’s Amanda Nunes knocks out Cris Cyborg, becomes world’s first female two-division champion

Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes, 30, of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil is reigning champion of the women’s bantamweight and featherweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She is the first and still the only female mixed martial artist to hold titles in two different divisions simultaneously.

Nunes became the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion on July 9, 2016 when she dethroned then champion Miesha “Cupcake” Tate, 32, of Olympia, Washington, United States. The two battled it out at “UFC 200” on July 9, 2016.

As the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Nunes successfully defended her belt three times. She defeated Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey, 31, of Venice, California, USA at “UFC 2017” on December 30, 2016, Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko, 30, of Lima, Peru at “UFC 215” on September 9, 2017 and Raquel “Rocky” Pennington, 30, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA at “UFC 224” on May 12, 2018.

While still reigning as the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Nunes challenged then reigning UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cristiane “Cris Cyborg” Justino, 33, of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil at “UFC 232” at The Forum in Inglewood, California, United States on December 29, 2018. It was the co-main event of the evening.

Referee Marc Goddard put a stop to the featherweight championship bout between Nunes and Justino after 51 seconds in the first round. The challenger knocked out the defending champion via punch.

Capturing the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship, Nunes earned her 10th victory in the UFC. The two-division champion is now riding an eight-bout winning streak.

The victory at “UFC 232” improved Nunes’s professional MMA record to 17 wins and 4 losses. It was the sixth time she won via knockout in the UFC octagon.

In 2013, Nunes knocked out Sheila “The German Tank” Gaff, 29, of Eschwege, Germany via punches and elbows and Germaine “The Iron Lady” de Randamie of San Jose, California via elbows. In 2015, Nunes knocked out Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler, 38, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA via leg kick and submitted Sara McMann, 38, of Gaffney, South Carolina, USA via rear-naked choke.

In 2016, Nunes defeated Shevchenko, submitted Tate via rear-naked choke and knocked out Rousey via punches. In 2017, the rematch between Nunes and Shevchenko ended via split decision in favor of the former.

Before facing Justino at “UFC 232,” Nunes knocked out Pennington via punches at “UFC 224” on May 12, 2018. Here is a backstage post-fight interview at “UFC 232” with the two-division champion:
