Catriona Gray won the hearts of the audience while talking about nonprofit Young Focus during her five-minute interview with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on the live episode of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” on January 7, 2019. It was one day after the 25th birthday of Miss Universe 2018.
Ripa and Seacrest greeted Gray a happy birthday and asked the reigning Miss Universe how she celebrated the special day. The Filipino-Australian beauty queen said she visited Broadway and had a food trip.
Born and raised in Australia, Gray moved to the Philippines when she was a teenager. Her Australian father Ian Gray was originally from Scotland while her Filipino mother Normita Magnayon is a native of Oas, Albay, Philippines.
After winning Miss Universe 2018 in Thailand, Gray spent her year-end vacation in the Philippines. Right after New Year’s Day, she moved to New York City, New York, United States where she is staying for a year to fulfill her duties as the 67th Miss Universe titleholder.
On “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” Gray talked about her work with Young Focus, which provides education to underprivileged children and young people from Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila, Philippines. She mentioned this in the Miss Universe 2018 final question-and-answer portion.
“I really believe that education is transformative,” Gray told Ripa and Seacrest. “It’s something that you can give to a child or to a person that can never be taken away from them, which is why I’m so passionate about it.”
Without NGOs like Young Focus, the poor children in Tondo might not ever experience going to school and developing a love for learning, Gray pointed out. For her, education is can “pull out a family out of poverty.”
Aside from “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” Gray also had a two-minute interview with Ginger Zee on “Good Morning America” as part of the reigning Miss Universe titleholder’s media tour in New York. The Filipino-Australian beauty queen wore a yellow dress during the tour.
