Tommy Chong, 80, is the second celebrity contestant revealed in “The Masked Singer” Season 1. The Canadian-American comedian, actor, musician, director, writer and cannabis rights activist was the man behind the masked known as The Pineapple.
Titled “New Masks on the Block,” “The Masked Singer” Season 1 episode 2 aired on January 9, 2019 on Fox. It featured six of the 12 mystery celebrity contestants of the reality singing competition series based on the South Korean show titled “King of Mask Singer.”
Hosted by Nick Cannon, “The Masked Singer” Season 1 made its premiere on January 2, 2019. Celebrity judges Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy met the first six mystery celebrity contestants namely the Deer, the Lion, the Monster, the Peacock, the Unicorn and the Hippo.
In the Bottom 3 were The Hippo, The Monster and The Deer. The first one to be voted out and unmasked was The Hippo, who was revealed to be Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown Sr., 30.
In episode 2, The Rabbit won the first match after singing “Livin’ la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin against The Alien who performed “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man. In the second match, The Pineapple sang “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor and lost to The Raven, who sang “Rainbow” by Kesha.
The Pineapple revealed that he beat a life-threatening disease. He said, “Seize the day before your dreams go up in smoke.”
In the third match, The Poodle sang “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar. She lost to The Bee who performed “Chandelier” by Sia.
The Alien, The Pineapple and The Poodle were in the Bottom 3. Garnering the lowest votes, The Pineapple was revealed to be Chong, which McCarthy correctly guessed.
Chong was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on May 24, 1938 to his Chinese father Stanley Chong and Scotch-Irish mother Lorna Jean. Tommy and Richard “Cheech” Marin, 72, are known as the Cheech and Chong comedy duo.
In the late 1980s, Tommy became a naturalized citizen of the United States. From 1971 to 2013, he and Cheech released 11 albums, four of which were nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.
