“America’s Next Top Model” creator Tyra Banks is one of the fans of the Lava Walk, which was made famous by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray. On January 10, 2019, the former took to Twitter to tell her fans she was still thinking about the famous walk.
Fans of the former supermodel and the beauty queen were excited by the idea of seeing the two doing the Lava Walk together. Even the Miss Universe Organization immediately supported the idea.
The Lava Walk is a slo-mo twirl Gray showed during the swimsuit round of the Miss Universe 2018 preliminary competition at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on December 13, 2018. It was an homage to her mother Normita Ragas Magnayon’s home province Albay where the famous Mayon Volcano is located.
Dubbed as the perfect cone, Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano known for its symmetric conical shape. It is the centerpiece of the Albay Biosphere Reserve declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2016.
Gray’s mother is particularly from Oas, Albay while her father Ian Gray is an Australian who was originally from Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Catriona was born in Cairns, Queensland, Australia where she spent her childhood before moving to the Philippines where she started a career as a model.
It was Catriona’s mentor Carlos Buendia Jr. who taught her the Lava Walk. Currently, she is in New York City, New York, United States to fulfill her duties as the reigning Miss Universe.
Catriona became the fourth Filipino to hold the title by besting 93 other candidates during the coronation ceremony at the Impact Arena on December 17, 2018. On the same day, Banks took to Twitter to let the Filipino-Australian beauty queen know that she approves of her fierceness.
Born in Inglewood, California, USA, Banks was only 15 years old when she started modelling. At the time, she was also attending John Burroughs Middle School in Los Angeles, California.
In Banks’ first runway show, she booked 25 shows in the 1991 Paris Fashion Week. Here is the “ANTM” creator showcasing her modelling skills while hosting “America’s Got Talent” Season 13:
