On January 10, 2019, Kimi Mugford, 18, arrived in India where she is set to represent the Philippines in Miss Universe 2019. In her introduction video, she mentions how proud she is of her Igorot roots.
“I am Filipino with Igorot heritage,” Mugford says. “My family has roots in Bangnin, Bauko, Mountain Province. My mother is proud of her heritage teaching me Kankanaey as I lived in Canada.”
Mountain Province is situated in one of the coldest parts of the Philippines. A landlocked province in the Cordillera Administrative Region, it is the only Philippine province with an English name.
For Miss Multinational 2019, Mugford will wear creations by Cary Santiago and Patrick Starr. Her national costume will showcase her Igorot roots.
Growing up in Canada, Mugford was into various things including hockey and photography. As part of her advocacy, the Canadian-Igorot beauty queen aims to raise awareness about drug abuse.
