Wearing sequined gloves, the Alien sang “Happy” by Pharrell Williams in her solo performance on “The Masked Singer” Season 1 episode 5 titled “Mix and Masks.” She was the third to perform among the four mystery celebrity contestants on the episode.
Williams wrote, produced and performed “Happy.” The song is one of the songs in the soundtrack album of the 2013 3D computer-animated comedy film “Despicable Me 2,” which featured the voices of Ken Jeong, Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand and Steve Coogan.
In the group performance, the Alien performed “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons with the Lion, the Rabbit and the Unicorn. It marked the first group performance for the Fox reality singing competition show’s first season.
Like in previous episodes, the Alien said in her introduction video that she has spent her entire life under a microscope being poked and prodded. She added that she always craved the simple life growing up.
The Alien mentioned a catchphrase from the reality series “The Simple Life” starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. The masked singer grabs a food item and says, “That’s hot!”
Joel McHale was no longer as a guest panelist on “Mix and Masks.” He joined Jeong and other resident panelists Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger and Jenny McCarthy on the third and fourth episodes “Five Masks No More” and “Another Mask Bites the Dust,” which aired on Fox on January 16, 2019 and January 23, 2019, respectively.
Compared to the Alien’s performance in the previous episodes, her voice sounded deeper and she appeared more comfortable on stage. Scherzinger was happy and thrown off by the Alien’s performance of “Happy” by Williams because her vocals were much better while Jeong had no clue and was totally confused.
For McCarthy, the Alien could be a professional singer and not Richie, who was her first guess. Each masked singer brought an object to help reveal who they are and the Alien brought a police badge, which says Indiana.
“This badge is not a prop,” the Alien said. “I’m sword to protect and serve.”
The panel believed that the Alien could be LaToya Jackson. Britney Spears and Paula Abdul were also included as the guesses.
