Originally titled “Forever ‘B'” and released in the United States on May 26, 2017, “Abducted in Plain Sight” premiered on Netflix on January 15, 2019 but it was only recently that people started talking about it. The true-crime documentary tells how actress Jan Broberg Felt, 57, was abducted twice by a pedophile named Robert “B” Berchtold, who was married to Gail Berchtold.
Understandably, Robert earned the ire of the viewers. But what really made the documentary controversial is the outrage towards the victim’s parents namely Bob Broberg and Mary Ann Broberg.
Robert was friends with the Brobergs. He abducted Felt first when she was 12 years old then when she was 14 years old and why the parents were not able to stop it infuriated many viewers of “Abducted in Plain Sight.”
On February 4, 2019, Felt took to Twitter to defend her parents. She also explained why they had to tell their story.
Felt was born on July 31, 1962 in Pocatello, Idaho, United States. She is currently married to Larry Felt and she has a son named Austen Duke Tanner from a previous marriage.
Directed by Skye Borgman, “Abducted in Plain Sight” starts in the 1970s in Pocatello. Robert, who was then 40 years old, is introduced as a fun dad who was a friend to Jan’s family.
“He was like a second father to me,” Jan says of Robert. In October 1974, he kidnapped her and took her to Mexico where he brainwashed and abused her for five weeks.
Robert made Jan believe that she was abducted by aliens and they needed to have a child to save the dying planet. He was eventually arrested for kidnapping and Gail asked Bob and Mary Ann to drop the charges since Jan was not physically hurt.
Indeed, the victim’s parents withdrew their most serious charges and while the pedophile was sentenced for five years in prison, he only served 10 days. Bob and Mary Ann were told to cut off communication with Robert and Gail, which they did not do, according to Pete Welsh, the lead FBI agent who investigated Jan’s disappearance.
When Jan was 14 years old, Robert installed her as a student in a Catholic school in Pasadena, California, USA. He told the nuns that she was his daughter and he was a former CIA agent on the run from Lebanon.
The FBI managed to find Robert with Jan and he was arrested again. He was sent to a mental facility on an insanity charge and was released after only six months.
How Robert managed to abduct Jan twice is not the only mind-boggling puzzle in “Abducted in Plain Sight.” The other strange revelations include Mary Ann’s extramarital affair with Robert and Bob’s homosexual act with the pedophile, which the perpetrator’s wife used to threaten the victim’s parents.
In 2003, Mary wrote a book about their story titled “Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story.” In 2004, Robert denied the accusations and told ABC News that the Brobers were just “trying to make a buck.”
In an episode of “Dr. Phil” aired on October 5, 2017, Jan narrated her story to Dr. Phil McGraw. In 2005, Robert died at the age of 69 while Bob passed away in 2018.
