Mugshots of a Chinese woman taken at the Mandaluyong City Police Station in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines went viral on February 9, 2019. She is Jiale “Carla” Zhang, 23, who is currently based in Metro Manila.
The hullabaloo started when Zhang brought taho or soy bean custard drink inside the Boni MRT station in Mandaluyong City. Unconsumed drinks have long been barred at MRT stations in Metro Manila and after the twin blasts in Jolo, Sulu on January 27, 2019, all liquids are banned, as well.
MRT security officers tried to prevent Zhang from entering the station’s platform area due to her unconsumed drink but they had a hard time. PO1 William Cristobal of the Philippine National Police Regional Mobile Force Battalion’s 4th Mobile Company had to intervene.
Instead of obeying Cristobal, Zhang decided that the best way to handle the situation was to throw the taho drink at the police officer. She was arrested and charged with direct assault, disobedience to agent or person in authority and unjust vexation.
Zhang is originally from Weifangshih, a prefecture-level city in Shandong, China. The city is home to several natural and historic sites including the Shihu Garden, Fangong Pavilion, Mount Yi National Forest Park, Mount Qingyun and the Old Dragon Spring.
Among the notable people from Weifangshih is Chinese supermodel Fei Fei Sun, 29. Currently based in New York City, New York, United States, she is a spokesmodel of cosmetic giant Estée Lauder.
Currently, Zhang is studying fashion at SoFA Design Institute at the Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati City, Metro Manila. Established in 2007, the school is the first specialized design college in the Philippines.
The SoFA Design Institute offers Fashion Design, Interior Design, Design Education, Fashion Marketing, Furniture Design, Fashion Accessories Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Education. The college’s dean is Tobias Guggenheimer.
From its various programs, the SoFA Design Institute has produced hundreds of graduates. Among them are Vania Romoff, Kaye Morales, Tipay Caintic and Tal de Guzman.
Meanwhile, here is National Capital Region Police Office chief Guillermo Eleazar reprimanding Zhang:
