Training out of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines, Gina “Conviction” Iniong, 29, was one of the winners at “ONE: Clash of Legends” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on February 16, 2019. It was the Filipino mixed martial artist’s fourth win in ONE Championship.
“ONE: Clash of Legends” is the first ONE Championship event in Thailand in 2019 and it featured five Muay Thai contests and seven MMA bouts. In the sixth bout of the evening, Iniong faced Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan, 20, of Malaysia in an MMA bout in the women’s atomweight division.
Kemp Cheng served as the referee of the atomweight match between Iniong and Radzuan. The Filipino contender put on an all-around performance, shutting down her Malaysian opponent.
A step ahead on all fronts, Iniong easily prevented Radzuan’s takedowns while also picking the Malaysian standout apart in the striking department with her signature right hand. In a last-ditch effort late in the third round, the Malaysian contender caught the Team Lakay fighter in a rear-naked choke but the latter managed to hang on to the final bell.
After three five-minute rounds, the bout was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Cheng raised the hand of Iniong, who was declared the winner via split decision.
This made Iniong the first fighter to defeat Radzuan in a professional MMA bout. Winning at “ONE: Clash of Legends” improved the Team Lakay fighter’s professional MMA record to 8 wins and 4 losses.
On the other hand, Radzuan now has 4 wins and 1 loss. She is training out of Ultimate MMA Academy in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Including the Philippines and Malaysia, 14 countries were represented at “ONE: Clash of Legends.” The other countries were Cambodia, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Iniong and Radzuan were the sole representatives of the Philippines and Malaysia, respectively, at “ONE: Clash of Legends.” It was a redemptive win for the Team Lakay fighter who was coming out of a unanimous decision loss to Istela Nunes, 26, of Brazil at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” on July 7, 2018 at Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.
A six-time national wushu champion, Iniong has been competing professionally in MMA since 2010 and she joined ONE Championship in 2017. The first three opponents she defeated in the Singapore-based martial arts organization were Natalie “The Kilapino” Hills, 30, of Australia, Priscilla “Thathi” Hertati Lumban Gaol, 30, of Indonesia and Jenny “Lagy GoGo” Huang, 26, of Taiwan.
