One of the four title bouts scheduled at “ONE: A New Era” is between reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, 22, of Singapore and reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 31, of China. The former is the challenger while the latter is the defending champion.
Lee has long envisioned victory over Xiong and views this history-making opportunity as one that could elevate her to legendary status. A victory would mean becoming the first-ever simultaneous two-division female mixed martial arts world champion in ONE Championship.
The reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion offers a few takes on Xiong. The Singaporean mixed martial arts star holds her Chinese opponent in high regard but says is beatable.
“I’m not going to be scared to stand in the pocket with her or take the fight wherever it goes,” Lee said. “I think that’s the main difference. I’m going to take this fight wherever it needs to go so I can finish her.”
“I’m just going to make her quit,” Lee continued. “I’m going to do whatever it takes. I’m going to put the pressure on her and I’m going to take her places she has never been.”
Winning a second World Title would be a dream come true for Lee. She promises to give the performance of her life at “ONE: A New Era,” which will take place at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on March 31, 2019, marking ONE Championship’s first ever event to take place in the country.
“ONE: A New Era” will feature two kickboxing contests, two Muay Thai bouts and 12 MMA bouts. The match between Lee and Xiong will be the co-main event of the evening and in the main event, Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan will challenge reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 35, of the Philippines.
