Three of the nine mixed martial arts matches at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” are between Filipino contenders. One is the bantamweight bout between Jeremy “The Juggernaut” Pacatiw, 22, of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines and Mark “The Ruthless” Alcoba, 27, of UGB MMA in Marikina City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
In an exclusive interview at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, on February 18, 2018, I asked Pacatiw if he would rather choose a non-Filipino opponent over a fellow Filipino if it was up to him. He told me, “Mas maganda ‘pag non-Filipino.” (It would be better if the opponent is non-Filipino.)
“Siyempre, parang kakaiba ‘pag Pilipino ‘yong kalaban mo sa Pilipinas, (Of course, it is different if you fight a fellow Filipino in the Philippines.) Pacatiw continued. “Unfortunately, they gave me a fellow Filipino so we will just give our best. May the best man win.”
In 2017, Pacatiw and Alcoba were on the same card in an event by Fight Con Philippines in Pasig City, Metro Manila. They both won in separate fights.
Alcoba is making his Brave CF debut at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.” On the other hand, it will be Pacatiw’s eighth bout in the Bahrain-based MMA promotion making him the athlete with the most fights in the promotion.
“To my opponent Mark Alcoba, I know that parang iba ‘yong pakiramdam pero (the feeling is strange but)… I know that we are preparing for this fight,” Pacatiw said when asked to give a message to Alcoba. “It’s a fight for our career. I know that, ‘yon nga, ‘yong feeling is kakaiba (as I said, the feeling is strange) but let’s give a good show. Let’s show to the whole world that we Filipinos are very competitive. Ipakita natin ‘yong talent natin sa kanila. (Let’s show our talent to them.)”
Featuring nine MMA matches, “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” is the first ever Brave CF event to be held in the Philippines. It will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on March 15, 2019.
Including Pacatiw and Alcoba, the fight card has 11 Filipino fighters, five of whom are training out of Team Lakay. Watch my full interview with Pacatiw here:
