Dagestan’s Islam Makhachev earns 6th UFC win at ‘UFC Fight Night 149’ in St. Petersburg, Russia

Islam Makhachev, 27, Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia was one of the winners at “UFC Fight Night 149.” It was his sixth victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Featuring 11 mixed martial arts matches, “UFC Fight Night 149” took place at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia on April 20, 2019. In the 10th bout of the evening, Makhachev fought Arman Tsarukyan, 22, of Krasnodar, Russia in the lightweight division.

Herb Dean served as the referee. After three five-minute rounds, the lightweight bout was left in the hands of the judges namely Lucasz Bosaki, Howard Hughes and David Lethaby.

In the end, Dean raised the hand of Makhachev, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision. Both Bosaki and Hughes scored it 30-27 while Lethaby scored it 29-28 all in favor of the Russian contender.

Winning at “UFC Fight Night 149” improved Makhachev’s professional MMA record to 17 wins and 1 loss while Tsarukyan now has 13 wins and 2 losses. For their performances, they won Fight of the Night.

At “UFC Fight Night 149,” Makhachev and Tsarukyan were among the 10 hometown heroes who competed in front of their countrymen. Brazil, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Korea and the U.S. were also represented.

Tsarukyan made his UFC debut at “UFC Fight Night 149.” For Makhachev, it was his seventh bout in the promotion.

Born in Makhachkala on September 27, 1991, Makhachev is trained by Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of reigning UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, 30, of Dagestan. Makhachev has been competing professionally since 2010.

Makhachev was an undefeated fighter from 2010 to early 2015. His record was broken when he was knocked out via punch by Adriano Martins, 36, of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil at “UFC 192” at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA on October 3, 2015.

Before facing Tsaruktan at “UFC Fight Night 149,” Makhachev defeated five opponents in the UFC. They were Leo “The Lion” Kuntz, 35, of Coconut Creek, Florida, USA, Chris Wade, 31, of Islip, New York, USA, Nik “The Carnie” Lentz, 34, of Coconut Creek, Gleison Tibau, 35, of Coconut Creek and Kajan “Ragin” Johnson, 35, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
