Team Souwer, Combat Brothers’ Pieter Buist earns 1st ONE Championship win at ‘ONE: Warriors of Light’ in Bangkok, Thailand

Training at Team Souwer and Combat Brothers, Pieter “The Archangel” Buist, 31, of Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands was one of the winners at “ONE: Warriors of Light.” It was his first win and first bout in ONE Championship.

Featuring three kickboxing contests, four Muay Thai matches and five mixed martial arts bouts, “ONE: Warriors of Light” took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on May 10, 2019. In the third bout of the evening, Buist faced Kota “Kong” Shimoishi, 31, of Osaka, Japan in an MMA match in the lightweight division with Yoshinori Umeki served as the referee.

After getting controlled on the ground in the first round by the stronger wrestler in Shimoishi, Buist came alive in the second round. The Dutch fighter connected on a handful of significant strikes including a right straight that wobbled his Japanese opponent.

Buist followed up by landing three technical ground knees to earn the stoppage victory. Umeki put a stop to the lightweight contest after 3 minutes and 55 seconds in the second round.

Winning at “ONE: Warriors of Light” improved the professional MMA record of Buist. to 15 wins and 4 losses. On the other hand, Shimoishi now has 21 wins and 8 losses.

While Shimoishi was one of the four fighters who represented Japan at “ONE: Warriors of Light,” Buist solely represented the Netherlands. Algeria, Australia, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Cyprus, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Portugal, Thailand and the United States were also represented.

Born in the Netherlands, Buist made his professional MMA debut in 2012. He previously competed in Kunlun Fight, Centurion Fight Championship and World Fighting League, among others.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” marked Shimoishi’s third ONE Championship bout. He is training out of Shooto Gym Blows in Osaka under the tutelage of former Shooto Welterweight Champion Takashi Nakamura, 45, of Tokyo, Japan.
