More than just being a leading lady, Shaira Diaz, 24, is using her celebrity to promote women empowerment. This makes her the perfect actress to play the lead female character in ALV Films’ newest film titled “Because I Love You” who is a firefighter.
Showing a film like “Because I Love You,” whose lead female character is a firefighter, in the Philippines is groundbreaking in a way. The country is still patriarchal and its citizens expect men to be providers and each wife to be subservient to her husbands.
In a one-on-one interview at the press con for “Because I Love You” on June 7, 2019, I asked Diaz about her preparation for the firefighter role. “Actually, walang masyadong preparation pero nag-research ako sa Google and at the same time kasi, habang ginagawan namin ang mga fire scenes, nagtanong ako sa… may mga kasama kaming mga professional talaga na bombero so nagtanong din ako sa kanila, ‘Ganito ba dapat?'” (Actually, I did not have much preparation but I did some research on Google and at the same time, while we were doing the fire scenes, I asked the… professional firefighters were with us so I asked them, ‘Should it be like this?'”
“Pagdating sa pagsusuot ng uniform, dapat bang naka-tuck in ‘yong mga bota namin? Dapat bang hindi?” (When it comes to wearing the uniform, should I tuck in the boots? Should I not?) Diaz explained. “So ‘yon ‘yong isa sa mga ano kasi alam ko namang magiging delikado ‘yong mga scenes namin kasi may mga live fire talaga kami sa eksena. So, at the same time, nag-cardio-cardio din ako kasi puro takbo kami do’n, nagbuhat kami ng mabibigat na hose.” (So, that was one of the things because I knew that the scenes we were going to do would be dangerous because we had live fire in our scenes, so, at the same time, I also did some cardio exercises because we did a lot of running there, we carried heavy hose rolls.”
While Diaz plays the lead female character in “Because I Love You,” David Licauco plays the male counterpart, a rich polo player. The two previously co-starred in the GMA short film “One Hugot Away.”
“Walang filter sa David,” (David has no filter) Diaz said of Licauco. “So kung ano’ng nakikita niyo sa kanya, ‘yon lang siya. Gano’n lang din siya sa akin.” (So whatever you see in him, that is just what he is. That is also how he is to me.”
“Ang suerte lang namin kasi, ‘yon nga, ang daming nakapansin na ang lakas ng chemistry namin kahit hindi namin kami nag-e-effort na kunyari, magkukunyaring magdi-date,” (We are just very lucky because, you know, a lot of people noticed that we have a strong chemistry even though we are not exerting effort to pretend that we are dating) Diaz added. “So ‘yon. Nakakatawa.” (So there. It is so much fun.”
Directed by Joel Lamangan, “Because I Love You” is the second film released by ALV Films. Joining Diaz and Licauco in the cast are Michelle Dee, Timothy Lawrence Yap, Martin del Rosario and Samantha Lopez, among others.
“Because I Love You” will hit Philippine cinemas on June 26, 2019. Watch my full interview with Diaz here:
