Bulgaria’s Blagoy Ivanov earns 2nd UFC win, beats Tai Tuivasa at ‘UFC 238’ in Chicago

Fighting out of Sofia, Bulgaria, Blagoy “Baga” Ivanov, 32, was one of the winners at “UFC 238.” It was the fifth victory of the Bulgarian undefeated mixed martial artist in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Featuring 13 MMA matches, “UFC 238” took place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, United States on June 8, 2019. In the ninth bout of the evening, Ivanov competed in the heavyeight division against Tai “Bam Bam” Tuivasa, 26, of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia with Dan Miragliotta as the referee.

After three five-minute rounds, the heavyweight contest was left in the hands of the three judges, who scored it 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27. In the end, Miragliotta raised the hand of Ivanov, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “UFC 238” improved the professional MMA record of Ivanov to 18 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Tuivasa now has 8 wins and 2 losses.

Including Australia, Bulgaria and the U.S., 11 countries were represented at “UFC 238.” The other countries were Brazil, China, England, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia and Scotland.

Born in Sofia on October 9, 1986, Ivanov is a Sambo practitioner. Representing Bulgaria, he won the Combat Sambo World Championships in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 2008.

As an MMA fighter, Ivanov has been competing professionally since 2007. He had his first loss on May 17, 2014 at “Bellator 120” in the hands of Alexander “Drago” Volkov, 30, of Moscow, Russia, who is also currently competing in the heavyweight division of the UFC.

When Ivanov made his UFC debut at “UFC Fight Night 133” on July 14, 2019, he lost via unanimous decision to Junior “Cigano” dos Santos, 35, of Brazil. On March 9, 2019, the Bulgarian fighter defeated Ben Rothwell, 37, of the U.S. via unanimous decision at “UFC Fight Night 146.”

Ivanov competed in Bellator MMA from 2011 to 2014 and in World Series of Fighting from 2015 to 2017. He is a former WSOF Heavyweight Champion.
