‘Bellator 222’ results: Lyoto Machida vs Chael Sonnen in Madison Square Garden

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, 41, of Belem, Para, Brazil and Chael Sonnen, 42, of West Linn, Oregon, United States competed at “Bellator 222” on June 14, 2019. They co-headlined the Bellator MMA event that took place in Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, USA.

“Bellator 222” featured 18 MMA matches. The official weigh-ins took place at the Bellator host hotel in New York where Machida and Sonnen weighed 204.4 lbs and 205.6 lbs, respectively.

Machida was one of the five fighters who represented the Brazil at “Bellator 222” while Sonnen was one of the 27 representatives of the U.S. Canada, Hungary, Israel, Japan and Peru were also represented.

Blue Corner

Born in Oregon on April 3, 1977, Sonnen earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Oregon. As an MMA fighter, he has been competing professionally since 1997.

“Bellator 222” marked Sonnen’s fifth Bellator MMA bout. He competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship from 2005 to 2013.

Machida was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil on May 30, 1978 and grew up in Belem. His father Shotokan karate master Yoshizo Machida is Japanese and his mother Ana Claudia is Portuguese-Italian.

“Bellator 222” marked Machida’s second Bellator MMA fight. He competed in the UFC from 2007 to 2018.

Fight Result

Machida and Sonnen competed in the light heavyweight division. Todd Anderson served as the referee.

Anderson put a stop to the light heavyweight bout after 22 seconds in the second round. Machida knocked out Sonnen via flying knee and punches.

Winning at “Bellator 222” improved the professional MMA record of Machida to 26 wins and 8 losses. On the other hand, Sonnen now has 30 wins, 17 losses and 1 draw.

“Bellator 222” Main Event

Neiman Gracie, 30, of Brazil challenged reigning Bellator Welterweight World Champion Rory “Red King” MacDonald, 29, of Canada in the main event, which was also a Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix semi-final bout. The defending champion won via unanimous decision.
