Keith Thurman: Manny Pacquiao is not a welterweight

World Boxing Association Super World Welterweight Champion Keith “One Time” Thurman, 30, of the United States and WBA Regular Champion Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, 40, of the Philippines will compete at “Welterweight Supremacy” MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on July 20, 2019. Prior to the bout, the American champ has a lot to say about his Filipino opponent.

“Manny Pacquiao has always been just a tremendous fighter, you know,” Thurman said in an interview with The Fight Guys. “Uhm, but with that said, you know, he’s a tremendous fighter. He’s not a technician, you know.”

“He doesn’t have the best defense in the sport, you know,” Thurman said of Pacquiao. “He’s known for his offense (and for) a little bit of his angle work but, you know, he’s not a welterweight. He’s not a big welterweight.”

Thurman added that many of the welterweights that Pacquiao defeated in the past were not at their best. The WBA Super World Welterweight Champion explained, “A lot of the welterweights that he fought when he was making a name for himself from like, you know, back in the day, whether it be Ricky Hatton, whether it be Oscar de la Hoya, whether it be “Sugar” Shane Mosley, they weren’t in their prime, you know.”

On the other hand, Thurman implied that today is his time and Pacquiao is facing the sunset of his career. The American champ declared, “And now, this is the time when I’m in my prime.”

“Manny is not in his prime yet his fighting an undefeated welterweight champion in the world who’s younger, bigger, stronger, you know,” Thurman continued. “Uhm, he’s been in the ring with stronger opponents before. He’s been in the ring with bigger opponents before (but) he has not been in the ring with a lot of younger opponents before.”

On July 19, 2019, both Pacquiao and Thurman weighed in at 146.5 lbs during the official “Welterweight Supremacy” weigh-in and face-off at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Meanwhile, here is The Fight Guys’ full interview with the undefeated American boxer:
