Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, 47, of the United States and reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 41, of the Philippines recently interviewed each other. Among the topics they talked about were “Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw” and “ONE: Century 世紀.”
Written by Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce and directed by David Leitch, “Hobbs and Shaw” is a spin-off of the “Fast and Furious” film series. The title characters Hobbs and Shaw are played by Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively.
“I thought it was amazing,” Vera said of “Hobbs and Shaw.” “I’m not just saying this, I promise. How was the action scenes?”
“(I’m asking this) because you’ve done a lot of fight scenes and you’ve done a lot of, you know, action stuff but this one, the action was way cleaner,” Vera told Johnson. “What happened? What changed? What was different about it?”
“Well, first of all, it means a lot coming from you,” Johnson replied. “Thank you for that. When you can break down the action like that because you know fighting so well and you’re such a badass yourself.”
“Hobbs and Shaw” will hit theaters in the U.S. on August 2, 2019. It also stars Idris Elba as Brixton Lore, Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw, Eiza Gonzalez as Madam M, Helen Mirren as Magdalene Shaw and Charlize Theron as Cipher.
“We have guys who are pretty proficient at fighting or at least throwing a punch in Jason,” Johnson told Vera. “I can throw a decent punch, you know. (I) used to suplex guys around the ring for many years but also too, with Idris. He’s a big dude too.”
According to Johnson, Elba has been training Muay Thai for a long time and is proficient with his kicks. The English actor had one professional fight, which was show in the documentary “Idris Elba: Fighter.”
As a professional wrestler, Johnson made his debut in 1996 with the World Wrestling Federation, now known as the World Wrestling Entertainment. He is now semi-retired.
Johnson made his film acting debut in 2001 when he played a mugger in “Longshot” and the Scorpion King in “The Mummy Returns.” He played Luke Hobbs in “Fast Five” in 2011, in “Fast and Furious 6” in 2013, in “Furious 7” in 2015 and in “The Fate of the Furious” in 2017.
On the other hand, Vera made his film acting debut in 2018. He played Rico Yatco in “BuyBust” opposite Anne Curtis as Nina Manigan.
As a professional mixed martial artist, Vera has been competing since 2002. He joined ONE Championship in 2014.
Vera told Johnson that he is currently in Los Angeles, California, USA preparing for his upcoming bout at “ONE: Century 世紀.” The reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion will become a two-division champ if he successfully dethrones ONE Light Heavyweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, 33, of Myanmar.
“He’s the man,” Vera said of Aung. “He’s the man’s man. His country built a statue for him.”
“ONE: Century 世紀” will take place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on October 13, 2019. Meanwhile, watch the full conversation between Johnson and Vera here:
