Dublin, Ireland’s Fionnghuala O’Reilly to compete in Miss Universe 2019

Irish-American model and National Aeronautics and Space Administration data analyst Fionnghuala O’Reilly, 25, will represent Ireland in Miss Universe 2019. She is the 55th woman from her country to compete in the international beauty pageant.

O’Reilly was born to an Irish father and an African American mother in Washington, D.C., United States in 1994. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Currently, O’Reilly is based in Swords, Dublin, Ireland. She words remotely from home as a Director of the NASA Space Apps Challenge and a NASA Datanaut.

In 2017, O’Reilly competed in Miss District of Columbia USA 2018. She was the third runner-up.

On August 1, 2019, O’Reilly was crowned Miss Universe Ireland 2019 at the Round Room of the Mansion House on Dawson Street in Dublin. She bested 27 other finalists.

As Miss Universe Ireland 2019, O’Reilly won more than €70,000 worth of prizes. She received a year’s supply of hair and make-up treatments and all-expenses-paid trips to New York, USA; Miami, Florida, USA; and South Korea.

The NASA data analyst from Dublin was crowned by Miss Universe Ireland 2018 Grainne Gallanagh, who finished in the Top 20 in Miss Universe 2018. Gallanagh succeeded Miss Universe Ireland 2017 Cailin Toibin, who finished in the Top 16 in Miss Universe 2017.

“I remember when I watched Miss Universe for the very first time when I was a little girl and I saw the last two contestants who became Miss Universe Ireland, Gráinne Gallanagh and then Cailín before her and they did an absolutely fantastic job,” Irish Examiner quoted O’Reilly as saying. “It was really motivating to see those women up there.”

If O’Reilly wins Miss Universe 2019, she will be the first ever candidate from her country to win the title. The best Miss Universe placement by a candidate from Ireland was by Marlene McKeown in 1963 and Roberta Brown in 1983, who were both second runners-up.

The reigning Miss Universe 2018 is Catriona Gray, 25, of the Philippines. She is the fourth Miss Universe from her country and 67th woman to hold the title.
