Peruvian-Kyrgyzstani mixed martial artist Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko, 31, successfully defended her UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship title for the second time. She defeated Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche, 35, of San Diego, California at “UFC Fight Night 156.”

Featuring 13 professional MMA bouts, “UFC Fight Night 156” took place at the Antel Arena in Montevideo, Uruguay. In the main event of the evening, Carmouche challenged Shevchenko for the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship belt.

Keith Peterson served as the referee. After five five-minute rounds, the welterweight bout was left in the hand of the three judges, who all scored it 50-45.

In the end, Peterson raised the hand of Shevchenko, who was declared the winner via split decision. It was her seventh victory in the UFC.

“My strategy was to use all my skills to defend her,” Shevchenko said in her post-fight interview. “She has very uncommon techniques, style and timing so I did everything to assure my victory inside the cage.”

Winning at “UFC Fight Night 156” improved the professional MMA record of Shevchenko to 18 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Carmouche now has 13 wins and 7 losses.

Including Peru, and the U.S., 11 countries were represented at “UFC Fight Night 156.” The others were Brazil, France, Mexico,  Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Shevchenko was one of the three fighters who represented Peru. Carmouche was one of the five representatives of the U.S.

It was a rematch between Shevchenko and Carmouche. On September 30, 2010, the American contender knocked out her Peruvian-Kyrgyzstani opponent at “C3 Fights: Red River Rivalry” at the Lucky Star Casino in Concho, Oklahoma, USA.

Born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on March 7, 1988, Shevchenko started her taekwondo training when she was 5 years old. She moved to Peru in 2008.

On December 8, 2018, Shevchenko earned the then vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship title by defeating former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk, 31, of Poland. In the Peruvian-Kyrgyzstani champ’s first title defense, she knocked out Jessica “Evil” Eye, 32, of Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

“UFC Fight Night 156” marked Shevenko’s ninth UFC bout. The first four opponents she defeated in the promotion were Sarah Kaufman, 33, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm, 37, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA; Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Peña, 29, of Chicago, Illinois, USA and Priscila “Pedrita” Cachoeira, 30, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
