2019 UEFA Super Cup results: Liverpool vs Chelsea in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey played host to the first all-English UEFA Super Cup. On August 14, 2019, Liverpool F.C. take on Chelsea F.C. at the Vodafone Park in Beşiktaş, Istanbul.

The video assistant referee system made its debut in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup. Featuring two English sides, the match marked the eighth overall Super Cup to feature two teams from the same country and the first time UEFA Super Cup was held in Turkey.

A FIFA referee since 2009, Stephanie Frappart of France served as the referee.  She was the first woman to referee the final of a UEFA men’s competition.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea had 20 total shots in the two halves and the extra time. The former had 11 shots on target, four saves, eight corner kicks and 51 percent ball possession while the latter has six shots on target, nine saves, seven corner kicks and 49 percent ball possession.

After extra time following a 2–2 draw, Liverpool defeated Chelsea 5-4 on penalties. This is the fourth UEFA Super Cup title of the professional football club in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool also won in 1977, 2001 and 2005 and participated in 1978 and in 1984 but did not win. The team won in the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea won in 1998 and partcipated in 2013 and in 2013 but did not win. The team won the 2018-2019 UEFA Europa League.

The Liverpool players were Adrian, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, James Milner, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and team captain Jordan Henderson. The substitutes were Andy Lonergan, Caoimhin Kelleher, Ki-Jana Hoever, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harvey Elliott, Roberto Firmino, Rhian Brewster and Divock Origi.

Cesar Azpilicueta was Chelsea’s captain and his teammates were Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Emerson Palmieri, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud and Pedro. The substitutes were Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso, Davide Zappacosta, Fikayo Tomori, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour, Tammy Abraham, Willian, Kenedy and Mitchy Batshuayi,

Hailing from Kazakhstan, Ali Turganbekov, a football fan born without legs, helped UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin  to hand over the Super Cup trophy to Liverpool. Meanwhile, here is a clip from UEFA:
