Training out of Selapak and FFG in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Chan Rothana, 33, was one of the winners at “ONE: Dreams of Gold.” It was the Cambodian mixed martial artist’s sixth victory in ONE Championship.
Featuring MMA, kickboxing and Muay Thai, “ONE: Dreams of Gold” took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on August 16, 2019. In the fifth bout of the evening, Rothana fought Gustavo “El Gladiador” Balart, 32, of Cuba in an MMA contest in the flyweight division.
Yoshinori Umeki as the referee. Dom Lau was the cage announcer while Michael Schiavello and Mitch Chilson were the commentators.
Rothana put his height and reach advantage to good use as he outstruck Balart. But the Cuban was nothing short of aggressive in using his superior wrestling to get the action to the ground.
After three five-minute rounds, the flyweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Umeki raised the hand of Bangpleenoi, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.
Winning at “ONE: Dreams of Gold” improved the professional MMA record of Rothana to 7 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Balart now has 8 wins and 3 losses.
Including Cambodia and Cuba, 19 countries were represented at “ONE: Dreams of Gold.” The others were Brazil, China, Cyprus, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Rothana solely represented Cambodia. Balart was the only representative of Cuba.
Born in Thailand on February 8, 1986, Rothana joined ONE Championship in 2014. The first five opponents he defeated in the promotion were Prak Chanson, 30, of Cambodia, Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales, 32, of the Philippines, Sam Ang Dun of Cambodia, Abro “The Black Komodo” Fernandes, 29, of Indonesia and Timor Leste and Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian, 33, of Indonesia.
