Stipe Miocic, 36, of Independence, Ohio, United States has been crowned the new heavyweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship again. The Croatian-American mixed martial artist earned the belt at “UFC 241.”
Featuring 12 professional MMA bouts, “UFC 241” took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA on August 17, 2019. In the main event of the evening, Miocic challenged then reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel “DC” Cormier, 30, of San Jose, California, USA with Herb Dean as the referee.
In the first round, Miocic landed several punches then slammed Cormier to the mat. On the ground, the defending champion controlled matters with a series of unanswered hammer fists.
In the second round, Miocic became more aggressive but it was Cormier who landed more shots. The challenger scored a takedown in the third round but the defending champion quickly rose and stunned his Croatian-American opponent with a right hand.
In the fourth round, Miocic got even more aggressive and attacked Cormier with a series of unanswered blows. Dean put a stop to the title bout after 4 minutes and 9 seconds in the fourth round when the challenger knocked out the defending champion via punches.
This made Miocic the fourth MMA fighter to regain the UFC Heavyweight Championship title. The first three were Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia and Cain Velasquez.
Winning at “UFC 241” improved the professional MMA record of Miocic to 19 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Cormier now has 22 wins and 2 losses.
It was a redemptive win for Miocic. He became the UFC Heavyweight Champion at “UFC 198” on May 14, 2016 in Curitiba, Brazil where he dethroned then champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum, 42, of Los Angeles, California but lost the title to Cormier at “UFC 226” in Paradise, Nevada, USA on July 7, 2018.
Seven countries were represented at “UFC 241” namely Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Nigeria, South Korea and the U.S. Miocic and Cormier were two of the 17 representatives of the U.S.
Born to Croatian immigrants on August 19, 1982 in Euclid, Ohio, Miocic has been competing professionally since 2010 and joined the UFC in 2011. “UFC 241” marked his 12th victory in the promotion not including his one win in “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3” finale.
