Danny “The King” Kingad, 24, can be the next ONE Championship champion from Team Lakay, a mixed martial arts team based in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines. The Igorot MMA fighter will face Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, 32, of the United States in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix grand final.
“This is my time to become a world champion,” Kingad said. “I am blessed and extremely happy because this is truly one of my goals in life.”
ONE Championship will hold a two-part event titled “ONE: Century 世紀” at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on October 13, 2019, marking the martial arts organization’s 100th live event. In the co-main event of the first part, Johnson and Kingad will compete in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix grand final.
“I feel excited to face DJ,” Kingad shared. “I am happy because I have been given the opportunity to compete against him. I have been through so many difficulties both in my bouts and my training to reach my dreams, to reach the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship final.”
Kingad has scored a pair of decisions on his path in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, toppling Senzo Ikeda, 37, of Japan and Reece “Lightning” McLaren, 28, of Australia. Interestingly enough, the Team Lakay fighter holds decision wins over Johnson’s two opponents in Tatsumitsu “The Sweeper” Wada, 30, of Japan and Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu, 24, of Japan.
Currently, Kingad sports a six-bout win streak to his credit. He made his debut in 2014 and signed with ONE Championship just two wins and two years later.
Overall, Kingad holds a professional MMA record of 11 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, Johnson has 29 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.
On October 6, 2019, ONE Championship held an open workout at the Bellesalle Shibuya Garden in Tokyo featuring select “ONE: Century 世紀” athletes including Johnson. It was part of the ONE Martial Arts Fan Fest.
“I feel very fortunate to be here once again, this time competing in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship final,” Johnson shared. “I’m sure the fans are excited for all the festivities. The atmosphere at the ONE Martial Arts Fan Fest is buzzing and it perfectly sets the stage for the huge event coming up next week.”
