Why Woojin left K-pop boy band Stray Kids; ‘Clé: LEVANTER’ release post-poned

Kim Woo Jin, 22, who is professionally known as Woojin, is no longer the main vocalist of Stray Kids. The K-pop group’s management JYP Entertainment confirmed on October 28, 2019 that he had terminated his contract.

“Woojin, who has been a member of Stray Kids, has left the team and terminated his contract due to personal circumstances,” JYP Entertainment announced on Stray Kids’ fan forum. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused many fans.”

In the statement, JYP Entertainment also announced that Stray Kids’mini-album titled “Clé: LEVANTER” will be released on December 9, 2019. It was originally scheduled for November 25, 2019 but was postponed due to the departure of Woojin.

“We once again express apologies to the fans who have waited for a long time,” JYP Entertainment stated. “We ask for much support for Woojin who will be going on a new path, and we also ask for the warm support of STAY for the eight Stray Kids members who will once again go on the road towards their dreams with their compass.”

Born in Daejeon, South Korea on April 8, 1997, Woojin is an alumnus of the High School of Performing Arts in New York, New York, United States. He is skilled in the Japanese martial art kendo.

Woojin used to be a Fantagio trainee and an SM trainee. Having trained with NCT members, he is friends with “Jungwoo” Kim Jung-woo, 21.

JYP Entertainment formed Stray Kids through a reality show of the same name, which was broadcast on Mnet from October 17, 2017 to December 19, 2017. Including Woojin, nine contestants of the show became the official members of the K-pop group.

Bang Chan, 22, was assigned as the leader of Stray Kids. The other members are Lee Min Ho, 21, Seo Chang Bin, 20, Hwang Hyun Jin, 19, Han Ji Sung, 19, Lee Felix, 19, Kim Seung Min, 19, and Yan Jeong In, 18.


On January 8, 2018, JYP Entertainment released Stray Kids’ extended play “Mixtape,” which has seven songs. It was distributed through Genie Music.

On March 26,2018, JYP Entertainment released the official debut EP of Stray titled “I Am Not.” It was distributed through Iriver.
