Lee Ho Seok, 26, who is professionally known as Wonho, has left the K-pop boy band Monsta X. On October 31, Starship Entertainment took to Twitter to release a statement explaining his departure from the group.
“We greatly respect Wonho’s decision who wants to make sure the recent chain of events doesn’t distract from all the exciting things that are happening for MONSTA X now and what lies ahead in the future,” Starship Entertainment explained. “We will continue to hold legal liability for malicious and distorted claims related to this matter.”
Recently, Wonho’s name was dragged into two different controversies, which are an alleged run-in with the law when he was younger and an alleged debt to his former “Ulzzang Shidae” co-star Jung Da Eun. The former Monsta X member wrote a letter to his fans about his exit from the K-pop group.
“Firstly, I want to apologize for not being able to keep the promise that I would only give good memories to our fans and for causing them pain,” Wonho wrote in a letter obtained and translated from Korean to English by All Kpop. “Furthermore, I apologize for causing so many people concern due to my personal issues.”
In the letter, Wonho acknowledged that there was a time when he was immature and he has made big and small mistakes. He said he stayed on track and worked hard to avoid being ashamed of himself after becoming a trainee and debuting as a Monsta X member.
Wonho went on to apologize to the six remaining members of Monsta X namely rappers Joohoney and I.M. and vocalists Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun and Hyungwon, as well as to his fans. Wonho asked the fans to still give the group strength as Joohoney, I.M., Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun and Hyungwon have nothing nothing to do with the issues with him.
“I carefully ask that you give support and encourage the members,” Wonho wrote. “They are people who are too good to stop and get hurt like this because of someone like me. I’m so thankful and apologetic to the staff, members, and our fans who let me enjoy such happiness until this point.”
Born on March 1, 993 in Gunpo-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Wonho became a member of Monsta X when the group debuted in 2015. Starship Entertainment formed the group through the Mney reality survival program titled “No Mercy.”
Before the debut of Monsta X, Wonho co-starred with Jung on the Comedy TV variety show “Ulzzang Shidae.” On October 29, 2019, the latter took to Instagram to accuse the former of owing her money.
“We plan on submitting a legal complaint via our legal representative,” Starship Entertainment said in a statement obtained by My Daily. “We will release an official statement as quickly as possible.”
According to Jung’s friend Han Seo Hee, Wonho went to Suwon Detention Center in Dongsuwonucheguk, Gyeonggi-do on special charges in 2008. The former Monsta X member was 17 years old at the time.
Han referred to Wonho as a convict. On October 30, 2019, she took over Jung’s Twitter account to enumerate his alleged secrets.
With Wonho as a member, Monsta X has released three Korean-language albums and two Japanese-language albums. Here is the music video of the group’s “Follow” song:
