Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan, 31, of Iloilo City, Philippines has earned fifth victory in ONE Championship. The Filipino mixed martial artist was one of the winners at “ONE: Masters of Fate.”
Featuring 10 MMA matches and three Muay Thai contests, ONE Championship held “ONE: Masters of Fate” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on November 8, 2019. In the fifth bout of the evening, Catalan fought Gustavo “El Gladiador” Balart, 32, of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in an MMA match in the strawweight division.
Motohiro Tsuruwa served as the referee. Throughout the bout, Catalan was on point with his striking and was able to hold his own against the high-level grappling of Balart, who is an Olympian wrestler.
Tsuruwa put a stop to the strawweight contest after 4 minutes and 43 seconds in the second round. Catalan uncorked a well-timed right high kick that connected and took Balart out instantly much to the delight of Filipino crowd.
Winning at “ONE: Masters of Fate” improved the professional MMA record of Catalan to 9 wins and 6 losses. On the other hand, Balart now has 8 wins and 4 losses.
Including Cuba and the Philippines, 15 countries were represented at “ONE: Masters of Fate.” The others were Brazil, Cambodia, China, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
Balart solely represented Cuba. He trains out of Freedom Fighters MMA.
Catalan was one of the five representatives of the Philippines. He trains out of Catalan Fighting System.
It was Balart’s third ONE Championship bout. It was the ninth outing of Catalan in the Singapore-based martial arts organization.
