The republic of Peru is a megadiverse country in South America. It is bordered by Colombia and Ecuador to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south and Chile to the south.
On July 28, 1821, Peru declared its independence from Spain. Born in Lima, Peru, the late Javier Perez de Cuellar served as the fifth secretary-general of the United Nations from 1982 to 1991.
