Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, 63, and his wife Margarita Ibrahimoff, 63, whose respective screen names are Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, have tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) while in Australia. He took to Twitter to announce the news on March 12, 2020.
Wilson performed at the ballroom of the Emporium Hotel South Bank in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on March 5, 2020. In the evening of March 7, 2020, the singer-songwriter also performed at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia.
On the other hand, Hanks has been in Australia since January 2020 to film a Warner Bros. movie directed by Baz Luhrmann. It is a yet-to-be-titled Elvis Presley biopic, in which Hanks plays Colonel Tom Parker, the manager of Presley, who is played by Austin Butler.
Among the places Hanks and Wilson visited while in Australia were the Coolangatta Beach on the Gold Coast and the Bondi Beach in Sydney. But Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk assured people who have come in very close contact with the actor in recent days that they have little to worry about as experts will work very closely with him, Luhrmann and all of the cast and crew of the Warner Bros. film.
“From what the chief health officer has told me it’s over 15 minutes of being in close proximity,” Palaszczuk told 7news. “A selfie wouldn’t count as that. They will be getting the best treatment in our hospitals, just like anyone else.”
A Warner Bros. spokeperson also confirmed that a company member from the movie has tested positive for COVID-19. In a statement obtained by Indie Wire, the spokesperson said, “We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual. ”
“The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world,” the spokesperson continued. “The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently receiving treatment.”
Hanks and Wilson are currently in isolation at the Gold Coast University Hospital in Southport, Australia. Including the couple, there are seven new cases of coronavirus in Queensland.
Married since 1988, Hanks and Wilson have two sons namely Chester Hanks and Truman Hanks. Here is Chester’s message about his parents’ coronavirus diagnoses:
