Fighting out of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, 33, was one of the winners at “UFC on ESPN 9.” It was the Brazilian mixed martial artist’s 12th victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Burns is a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was born in Fonseca, Niteroi on July 20, 1986 to Herbert Burns and Tania Burns.

As an MMA fighter, Gilbert has been competing professionally since 2012 and joined the UFC in 2014. The first 11 opponents he defeated in the promotion were Andreas Stahl, Christos Giagos, Alex Oliveira, Lukasz Sajewski, Jason Saggo, Dan Moret, Olivier Aubin-Mercier, Mike Davis, Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson and Demian Maia.

Featuring 11 professional mixed martial arts matches, “UFC on ESPN 9” took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on May 30, 2020. In the main event of the evening, Gilbert fought Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley, 38, of St. Louis, Missouri, USA in the welterweight division.

Herb Dean served as the referee. After five five-minute rounds, the welterweight contest was left in the hands of the three judges, who scored it 50-45, 50-44 and 50-44.

In the end, Dean raised the hand of Gilbert. The Brazilian MMA fighter was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

“I’m next for the title,” Gilbert said in his post-fight interview. “I’m hungry and like I said, I can fight June or July book me a fight.”

Winning at “UFC on ESPN 9” improved Gilbert’s professional MMA record to 19 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Woodley now has 19 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw.

The UFC held “UFC on ESPN 9” amid the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Five countries were represented namely Brazil, Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan, Peru and the U.S.

Gilbert was one of the three fighters who represented Brazil. Woodley was one of the 27 representatives of the U.S.

In the co-main event of the evening, Augusto Sakai, 29, Curitiba, Parana, Brazil and Blagoy “Baga” Ivanov (Благой Иванов), 33, of Sofia, Bulgaria battled it out in the heavyweight division. The Brazilian contender won via split decision.
