Ansel Elgort biography: 13 things about Arthur Elgort, Grethe Barrett Holby’s son

Ansel Elgort is not just an actor, a singer and a dancer. He is also a disc jockey under the name Ansølo.

Elgort was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States on March 14, 1994. His father Arthur Elgort is a fashion photographer of Russian Jewish descent while his mother Grethe Barrett Holby is a stage producer of Norwegian, English and German descent.

Arthur and Grethe have three children and Ansel is the youngest. The first child Sophie Elgort, a fashion photographer, and the second child Warren Elgort, a cinematographer, were born in 1986 and 1989, respectively.

Ansel went to The Professional Performing Arts School in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts at the Upper West Side in Manhattan and attended a summer camp in Stagedoor Manor in Loch Sheldrake, New York. Here are 13 more facts about the actor, singer, dancer and DJ:

  1. In 2003, his mother took him to try out for the School of American Ballet in New York City. He went on to study there for five years.
  2. In March 2012, he played a lead role in an Off-Broadway production of “Regrets.”
  3. In 2013, he made his film debut by playing Tommy Ross in the remake of “Carrie,” which was played by William Katt in the 1976 version.
  4. In 2014, he and Shailene Woodley played siblings in “Divergent” and cancer-stricken teenagers in “The Fault in Our Stars.”
  5. As a singer, he released his first record “Unite” on Beatport on April 21, 2014 and on iTunes on May 5, 2014. Beatport and iTunes released his second record “Totem” on July 21, 2014.
  6. He dated his high school sweetheart Violetta Komyshan, a ballet dancer, from 2012 to 2014. She appeared in the music video of his single “Thief,” which was released on February 3, 2017.
  7. Released in September 2015, his Bar Mitzvah-themed song “To Life” is inflected with klezmer music.
  8. In 2016, he was shortlisted for the role of Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” but the role was eventually given to Alden Ehrenreich.
  9. His first single on Island/Universal Records titled “Home Alone” was released on July 8, 2016.
