Bishop Auckland, England’s Davey Grant knocks out Martin Day at ‘UFC 251’ on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Davey “Dangerous” Grant, 34, of Bishop Auckland, England was one of the “UFC 251” winners. The English mixed martial artist earned his third victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Featuring 13 MMA matches, “UFC 251” took place at the UFC Fight Island on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on July 11, 2020 (or July 12, 2020 in the UAE). In the first bout, Grant fought Martin “The Spartan” Day, 31, of Kailua, Hawaii, United States in the bantamweight division.

Rich Mitchell served as the referee. He put a stop to the bantamweight contest after 2 minutes and 38 seconds in the third round when Grant knocked out Day via left hook.

Winning at “UFC 251” improved Grant’s professional MMA record to 12 wins and 4 losses. The Bishop Auckland native is now riding a two-bout winning streak.

On the other hand, Day now has 8 wins and 4 losses. The Hawaiian MMA fighter is now riding a two-bout losing streak.


Including England and the U.S., 12 countries were represented at “UFC 251.” The others were Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, Finland, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Scotland and Switzerland.

Grant solely represented England. Day was one of the six representatives of the U.S.

In the co-main event, Max “Blessed” Holloway, 28, of Waiane, Hawaii, USA challenged UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski, 31, of Windang, New South Wales, Australia. The defending champion won via split decision.

In the main event, Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal, 35, of Miami, Florida, USA challenged reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman, 33, who was fighting out of Nigeria by way of Delray Beach, Florida. The defending champion won via unanimous decision.


Grant has been competing professionally since 2008. Before joining the UFC, he competed in Goshin Ryu, Total Combat, Shock n Awe and Made 4 The Cage.

After competing in “The Ultimate Fighter 18” finale, Grant made his UFC debut in 2016. The first two opponents he defeated in the promotion were Marlon “Chito” Vera, 27, of Chone, Ecuador and Grigory Popov, 36, of Yakutsk, Sakha, Russia.
