Iuri Lapicus, 25, of Moldova and Italy challenged ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 22, of Singapore at “ONE: Inside the Matrix.” ONE Championship held the mixed martial arts event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on October 30, 2020.
Both Lee and Lapicus are 180cm tall. The Moldovan-Italian challenger trains at Team Petrosyan in Milan, Italy while the Singaporean defending champion trains at Evolve MMA in Singapore and United MMA in Hawaii, United States.
“ONE: Inside the Matrix” featured six MMA matches, four of which are title bouts. It was the first sporting event in Singapore that allows for a limited live audience since it moved into the second phase of its reopening amid the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The title bout between Lapicus and Lee was the fifth bout of the evening. It was the Singaporean defending champion’s first title defense as the ONE Lightweight World Champion.
Mohamad Sulaiman served as the referee. At the sound of the opening bell, Lee dashed across the Circle, shooting in for a double leg.
Lapicus was able to reverse the takedown and land in top position. Lee worked to make his way back up to the feet, taking down his Moldovan challenger himself and landing in full mount.
While Lapicus tried to scramble, Lee showed immense control on the mat. From there, the defending champion connected on a series of hammer fist blows that rendered his challenger defenseless.
Sulaiman had no choice but to step in. He put a stop to the title bout after 2 minutes and 18 seconds in the first round when Lee knocked out Lapicus.
Winning at “ONE: Inside the Matrix” improved the professional MMA record of Lee to 14 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Lapicus now has 14 wins and 1 loss.
A total of 12 countries were represented at “ONE: Inside the Matrix” namely Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Italy, Moldova, Myanmar, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. Lapicus solely represented Italy and Moldova while Lee was one of the two representatives of the host country.
