The Weeknd beats Chris Brown, John Legend at American Music Awards 2020

Abel “The Weeknd” Makkonen Tesfaye, 30, of Canada was one of the big winners at the American Music Awards of 2020. The 48th edition of the annual American music awards show took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, United States on November 22, 2020.

The Favorite Male Artist award in the soul and R&B category was given to The Weeknd. The Ethiopian-Canadian singer-songwriter defeated African-American musicians Chris Brown, 31, and John Roger “John Legend” Stephens, 41.

On March 20, 2020, XO and Republic Records released The Weeknd’s fourth studio album titled “After Hours.” Among the songs included in the album are “Heartless,” “Too Late,” “Hardest to Love,” “Scared to Live,” “Snowchild,” “Faith,” “Blinding Lights,” “In Your Eyes” and “Save Your Tears.”

“Heartless” was selected as the Favorite Song in the soul and R&B category. It defeated “No Guidance” by Brown and Aubrey Drake Graham, 34, who is mononymously known as Drake and “Playing Games” by Summer Walker, 24.

“After Hours” was the Favorite Album in the soul and R&B category. Also nominated in the category were “Hot Pink” by Amala Ratna Zandile “Doja Cat” Dlamini, 25, and “Over It” by Walker.

On October 26, 2020, Dua Lipa, 25, and “Good Morning America” announced the nominees of the American Music Awards of 2020. She performed “Levitating” during the awards ceremony, which was hosted by Taraji P. Henson, 50, and was aired on ABC.

The Weeknd tied with country pop music duo Dan Smyers, 33, and Shay Mooney, 28, who are collectively known as Dan + Shay, Justin Bieber, 26, and Taylor Swift, 30, as the artists with the most awards. They each received three awards.

Dan + Shay sang “I Should Probably Go to Bed,” which is the second single from the duo’s upcoming fourth studio album. Bieber solely sang “Holy” and performed “Lonely” with Benjamin Joseph “Benny Blanco” Levin, 32, and “Monster” with Shawn Mendes, 22.

A solo performance of “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd was featured during the ceremony, as well. He also sang “In Your Eyes” with Kenneth Bruce “Kenny G” Gorelick, 64.
