Mr. South Africa 2020 is Hannes van der Walt; De Villiers Koster, Lee Jordan Jacobs are runners-up

Hannes van der Walt was crowned Mister South Africa 2020 on November 28, 2020. He hails from Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa.

Runner-up to van der Walt was De Villier Koster. Lee Jordan Jacobs was second runner-up.

The Mr. South Africa 2020 coronation ceremony was a closed-door event. Actress and fashion icon Aretha Bauwens, media personality and entrepreneur Saskia Riley and commercial pilot and Mrs. Mrs South Africa Top 5 finalist Storm Johnson served as the judges.


Mr. South Africa 2020 was sponsored by Diamends, DECORativ Vulindlela, Nedebe Group, Planet Fitness, Joico, Caribbean Tan, BODYtwenty Studio, One Virtual Solution, Grandilla, Comet Projects, Desert Storm, Beaucience, Waterpik Water Flosser and Antrim Villa. The competition started in 2019 with 95 candidates.

The list was eventually cut down to Top 30 then to Top 15 and in the end, only 10 finalists were selected to compete in the coronation ceremony. Stean Du Toit, Bruce Veldman, Kganya Sebatjane, Hlumisa Ngqeleni and Lindokuhle Nkomo finished in the Top 15.


Aside from van der Walt, Koster and Jacobs, the other finalists were David Schabort, Heinrich Moses, Danny Doman, Leon van der Westhuizen, Kyle Hans, Roan Kitshoff and Songezo Mankahla.

Schabort is the youngest finalist. The oldest one is van der Walt.

On November 11, 2020, the 10 finalists had a photo shoot wearing Niku Underwear. On November 27, 2020, they were treated to a wine tasting at Welbedacht Wine Estate on Oakdene Road in Wellington, South Africa.

During the coronation ceremony, Kitshoff won two special awards namely Mr. Photogenic and Mr. Physique. Mankahla was voted as People’s Choice while the Mister Heart award was given to Schabort.

After being crowned as Mr. South Africa 2020, van der Walt participated in an event at Encore Culture School in Kempton Park. He was invited as a guest speaker at the awards evening of the school.

Because of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it is likely that van der Walt is not representing South Africa in an international beauty pageant soon. Mr. South Africa 2019 Heinrich Gabler was unplaced when he competed in Manhunt International 2019 in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines on February 22, 2020.

Van der Walt is married to Natasha van der Walt. They have a daughter named Leane van der Walt and a son named Jovan van der Walt.
