Edgar Nava-Ayala, 34, of Anaheim, Orange County, California, United States has been arrested. The Hispanic man is accused of indiscriminately firing at least 15 rounds from an AK-47 style rifle into Sahara Theatre strip club at 1210 State College Boulevard in Anaheim on October 31, 2020, injuring one customer and two employees.
That day, Nava-Ayala was at the Sahara Theatre with his fellow Anaheim residents Daniel Juvenal Ocamponava, 22, and Juan Jose Acosta-Soto, 20. The three were physically removed from the club by security because they refused to wear face masks.
After being kicked out from the club, Nava-Ayala, Ocampo and Acosta-Soto rode a red Toyota Camry, left and came back. At around 1:30 a.m. that day, Nava-Ayala fired at the cub while around 30 people were inside the building.
On December 17, 2020, the Anaheim Police Department arrested Nava-Ayala, Ocampo and Acosta-Soto. The three suspects were held at the Anaheim Detention Facility on $500,000 bail each, according to Anaheim.net.
Nava-Ayala was charged with one felony count of shooting into an occupied building, three felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, three felony counts of assault with an assault weapon, three felony enhancements of causing great bodily injury and seven felony enhancements of personal use of an assault weapon. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 82 years to life in state prison.
On December 21, 2020, Nava-Ayala, Ocampo and Acosta-Soto pleaded not guilty in a hearing in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana, Orange County. The three Anaheim residents were ordered to return to court for a pretrial hearing in the West Justice Center in Westminster, Orange County on January 4, 2021.
