The Republic of Benin is a country in West Africa. Formerly known as Dahomey, the country is bordered by Niger to the northeast, Burkina Faso to the northwest, Nigeria to the east and Togo to the west.
Established on December 11, 1958, the Republic of Dahomey achieved its independence from France on August 1, 1960. The republic was renamed the People’s Republic of Benin on November 30, 1975 then the Republic of Benin on March 1, 1990.
French is the official language of Benin, which is a member of the United Nations. The country’s incumbent and eighth president Patrice Talon, 62, assumed office on April 9, 2016.
