Derek Michael Chauvin, 45, and Kellie Chauvin, 46, of Minnesota, United States are now divorced. They got married in June 2010 and have no children together.

On May 25, 2020, Derek and his fellow Minneapolis Police Department officers Tou Thao, 40, Thomas Kiernan Lane, 37, and J. Alexander Kueng, 26, were involved in the fatal arrest of George Perry Floyd Jr. On May 26, 2020, the department fired Derek, Thao, Lane and Kueng.

On May 28, 2020, Kellie separated from Derek. On May 31, 2020, she filed a divorce petition in the Washington County District Court in Stillwater, Minnesota.

On October 26, 2020, Washington County district judge Juanita Freeman rejected the divorce petition and cited the possibility of fraud. She allowed Derek and Kellie to submit a revised agreement.

Amanda Mason-Sekula represented Kellie while Derek represented himself in the divorce, which was granted on February 2, 2021. Kellie received $704,000 from the divorce settlement, leaving Derek with $421,000. 

In October 2018, Derek joined Kellie onstage when she represented Oakdale in United States of America’s Mrs. Minnesota 2019. Beating seven other candidates, she won the title making her the beauty pageant’s first winner of Hmong descent.

Born in Laos in 1974 during a time of war, Kelly was only 3 years old when she and her family fled to safety in Thailand. In October 1980, she and her family moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA.

At the age of 17, Kellie was married off by her parents to KuJay Xiong, a Hmong man she barely knew. They have two sons together namely Kheng Xiong and Xommvaxai Xiong.

After divorcing KuJay in August 2006, Kellie moved to Minnesota where she met Derek. She and Derek bought a townhouse in Windermere, Florida, USA for $210,900 in 2011 and another house in Oakdale, Minnesota in 2017 for $260,000.
