Rico Marley, 22, of Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, United States was arrested by Atlanta Police Department officers on March 24, 2021. He was charged with reckless conduct.
Just after 1:30 p.m. that day, Marley entered a Publix supermarket at Atlantic Station in Atlanta openly carrying a rifle, two long guns and three pistols. He was also wearing a body armor.
Marley entered the bathroom of the supermarket with the firearms. One witness named Charles Russell observed him and alerted the store manager, who subsequently then called police.
“It possibly could have stopped something,” Russell told WSBTV. “I saw an AR-15 and I was like, you know, this kind of startled me just again with events that recently happened in the grocery store up in Colorado.”
When Marley exited the bathroom, he was immediately detained for questioning by the officers who responded. They recovered five firearms and body armor from his possession during the investigation.
That day, Marley had a weapons carry license on him. The reason why he carried those weapons inside the grocery store that day is still unknown.
After being detained, Marley underwent a mental health evaluation by Grady EMS. He is expected to be transported to Fulton County Jail for further processing.
Publix has responded to the incident. In a statement, the company said the safety of its associates and customers is its priority.
“We are cooperating with local law enforcement on an incident that occurred earlier today in our Atlantic Station store,” Publix stated. “We are thankful that there were no injuries and all were able to exit the store safely.”
It was not the first time Marley was arrested. In 2017, he was charged with simple assault in DeKalb County, Georgia. The case was dismissed due to a technicality.
