The Austin Police Department is searching for Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41. The former Travis County Sheriff’s Office property crimes detective is armed and dangerous, according to the department.
Broderick is 5’7″ tall and was last seen wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and a gray hoodie. He is accused of fatally shooting three people at an apartment complex near Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway in Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States at around 11:42 a.m. on April 18, 2021, according to KXAN.
Two of the victims namely Alyssa Broderick and Willie Simmons were teenagers and were Elgin Independent School District students. Alyssa is Stephen’s daughter.
The third victim is an adult woman. Her name has yet to be released.
“Obviously, this is a tragedy,” USA Today quoted Austin Police Department interim chief Joe Chacon as saying. “We have people who have lost their lives here. We’ll do our best to get this person in custody.”
On June 6, 2020, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Stephen and charged him with sexual assault of a child, which is a first-degree felony. After his arrest, his wife filed for a protective order and divorce and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office placed him on administrative leave without pay, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
Stephen spent 16 days at the Travis County jail in Austin before posting a $50,000 bail. He resigned from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office upon his release.
The Travis County District Attorney’s office has filed a motion to revoke the bond Stephen posted on June 22, 2020. It is still unknown if he fled on foot or in a vehicle after the recent shooting in Austin.
Austin is the 11th most populous city in the U.S. The city is home to many lakes, rivers and waterways, including Barton Springs, Lake Walter E. Long, McKinney Falls and Lady Bird Lake and Lake Travis on the Colorado River.
The city was incorporated on December 27, 1839. Since 1987, the event called South by Southwest has been taking place in the city every year.
