Edward Cagney Mathews, 45, of Mount Laurel, Burlington County, New Jersey, United States was arrested again. On July 2, 2021, police were called to his home shortly after a video of him shouting offensive and racial slurs at an African-American neighbor went viral.

“This is not Africa,” Mathews tells the black neighbor in the viral video. “This monkey over here and this monkey over here…”

A Superior Court judge refused a prosecutor’s request that Mathews be held on a warrant and allowed him to be released on a summons. He was charged with bias intimidation and harassment.

On July 5, 2021, Mathews was arrested again at his Mount Laurel home. More than 100 people protested outside and several bottles were thrown at the residence and at the police.

Burlington County prosecutor Scott Coffina announced that additional charges of bias intimidation and assault were filed against Mathews. He faced an additional charge after the release of another footage that shows him spitting on a neighbor.

On August 31, 2020, someone who claimed to be Mathews’ neighbor in Mount Laurel asked advice from lawyers on AVVO. The neighbor accused him of targeting them with racial harassment discrimination.
