Argenis Rivas, 29, of Queens, New York City, New York, United States has been arrested by the New York City Police Department. He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, operating an unregistered motorcycle and operating a vehicle without insurance.
At around 5:45 p.m. on July 18, 2021, Rivas allegedly took off after slamming into Jonathan Beauchamps, 4, on an illegal motor bike while the boy was playing in the parking lot of the Meadowlake Trail at the Flushing Meadow Park in Queens. The boy suffered a broken ankle and bruises to his liver and lungs, his father Chris Beauchamps, 30, and stepmother told the New York Post.
Sources told the publication that Rivas is a member of the Trinitarios street gang. He later took to TikTok to share a video of himself talking about the incident.
“It was the parents’ fault,” Rivas said in Spanish, which was translated to English by CBS New York. “They weren’t paying attention to their kid.”
Using the TikTok video, a person submitted a tip to the NYPD Crime Stoppers. This led to the arrest of Rivas on July 21, 2021.
After being hit by Rivas’s dirtbike, Jonathan transported to Cohen Children’s Hospital in Queens. The boy has a long road to recovery although he is already stable, according to his parents.
Dirtbikes are reportedly found throughout New York City and not only at the Flushing Meadow Park. To deal with this problem, 109th New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, 60, asked helped from the public.
“We need community members to help us find where they’re being kept so we can get them, seize them,” NBC New York quoted de Blasio as saying. “If one’s out there, it’s immediately illegal. It’s just not allowed in New York City and we will destroy them literally and send a message to people.”
