Russia’s Daniil Medvedev beats Serbia’s Novak Djokovic at 2021 US Open in New York

Daniil Medvedev, 25, of Russia is the winner of the men’s singles at the 2021 at the 2021 United States Open Tennis Championships. It was the 141st edition of the annual hard court tennis tournament.

On September 12, 2021, Medvedev won the men’s singles title by beating Novak Djokovic, 34, of Serbia 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, New York, USA. Both tennis players are residents of Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Had Djokovic won, he would have been the second man in the Open Era to complete a grand slam following Rod Laver in 1969. By beating Djokovic, Medvedev became the third Russian man to win a major singles title following Yevgeny Kafelnikov‘s 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open wins and Marat Safin‘s 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open wins.

This is Medvedev’s first major title. On February 21, 2021, he was runner-up to Djokovic in the 2021 Australian Open men’s singles.

In June 2021, Medvedev was a quarterfinalist in the 2021 French Open men’s singles, which was won by Djokovic. In July 2021, the Russian tennis player reached the fourth round in the 2021 Wimbledon Championships men’s singles, which was also won by Djokovic.

Medvedev has been playing tennis professionally since 2014. In the same year, he and his girlfriend Daria Medvedveda started living together.

In 2017, Daniil and Daria moved to Monte Carlo and Gilles Cervara became his full-time coach. In the same year, Daniil reached the first round in the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open and the second round in the Wimbledon Championships.

On September 12, 2018, Daniil and Daria got married in Moscow, Russia. A year later, he said his marriage improved his tennis results.
