Andrew Carlson, 36, and Jordan Bowers, 32, of Oakville, Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States have been arrested. Their daughter Oakley Carlson, 5, is still missing.
After authorities responded to a request by a concerned citizen to check Oakley’s welfare on December 6, 2021, both Andrew and Bowers were considered persons of interest. Neither Andrew nor Bowers provided an answer when asked by investigators about Oakley’s whereabouts, according to Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Brad Johansson.
Andrew and Bowers were arrested and each charged with obstruction of law enforcement and first-degree manslaughter. On December 7, 2021, the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office put out a missing child alert and asked the public to be on the lookout for Oakley.
On December 8, 2021, the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office announced that Oakley’s parents are in custody at the Grays Harbor County Jail in Montesano, Gray Harbor County. Their bail was set at $150,000 each.
Authorities have yet to determine exactly when Oakley was seen by anyone. Former foster parents Erik Hiles and Jamie Jo Hiles cared for Oakley when Oakley was 7 months old until the court ordered the girl be returned to the biological parents.
In November 2020, a GoFundMe account was set up by a friend of Andrew and Bowers with photos showing damage to the couple’s Oakville home caused by a fire. When Erik and Jamie saw the fundraiser, they contacted authorities.
That was just one of the many times Erik and Jamie contacted authorities with concerns about Oakley’s safety. In January 2021, the former foster parents called social services again after getting some news about Oakley.
The judge set December 10, 2021 as a deadline for authorities to produce additional evidence before actual charges could be considered against Andrew and Bowers. Jamie told King 5, “We’ve had groups approach us and if they needed us out there searching, we’d be there in a heartbeat.”
