The Togolese Republic is a French-speaking country in West Africa. The country is bordered by Burkina Faso to the north, Benin to the east and Ghana to the west.
Togo is a member of the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States. On April 27, 1960, the country achieved its independence from France.
Faure Gnassingbé, 55, is the incumbent and fourth president of Togo. He assumed office on May 4, 2005.
