In 1956, Japan joined the United Nations. On May 1, 2019, Naruhito, 61, acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne as the country’s emperor, which marked the start of the Reiwa era.
On October 4, 2021, Fumio Kishida, 64, assumed office as Japan’s prime minister. As of 2021, the country has the third largest economy by nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in the world and the fourth largest by purchasing power parity (PPP).
