The Republic of South Ossetia – the State of Alania is a de facto state in Western Asia. Most United Nations members recognize the de facto state as de jure part of Georgia.

UN members Nauru, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria and Venezuela recognize South Ossetia while Georgia does not recognize the existence of the separatist polity as a political entity. Abkhazia, Artsakh, South Ossetia and Transnistria are the four members of the Community of Democracy and Rights of Nations or the Commonwealth of Unrecognized States, which was formed on June 14, 2006.

Anatoliy Bibilov, 52, is the incumbent president of South Ossetia. He assumed office on April 21, 2017.
