Los Angeles, California’s Tianze Zhang arrested in Taipei, Taiwan, accused of stealing almost $30M

Tianze Zhang, 30, of Los Angeles, California, United States is accused of burglarizing a house in Bernal Heights, San Francisco, California at around 4:00 p.m. on March 16, 2022. Wearing a hood, large ski goggles, gloves and other items covering his face and body, he allegedly used duct tape to tie up a woman inside the house and threatened to torture her with a knife.

Without speaking, Zhang allegedly pointed to instructions on an iPad hung around his neck, threatened to harm the woman more if she did not comply, transferred almost $3 million out of her account then fled the scene. After committing the crime, he allegedly left the U.S.

Eventually, Zhang was found in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. On May 30, 2022, Taiwanese authorities took him into custody and brought him to Taipei, Taiwan.

San Francisco Police Department sergeant John Hallisy obtained an arrest warrant and flew to Taiwan. On June 2, 2022, he arrested Zhang in Taipei.

On June 3, 2022, Zhang arrived at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco. San Francisco Police Department officers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents escorted him.

Zhang was booked into the San Francisco County Jail in San Francisco. He was charged with felony burglary, felony kidnapping for robbery and felony terrorist threats.
