If you’re thinking about becoming a barber, there are a few things you’ll need to get started. It’s not a difficult profession to get into but there are some basic requirements. Here are six of them:

.

1. Barber gear

This one is pretty self-explanatory. You’ll need the basic barbering equipment, including scissors, combs, razors and clippers. You should have barber mats and capes on hand. If you don’t have any of these items, you can usually purchase them at a beauty supply store or online.

While most barbershops have most of this gear available for you to use, it’s always a good idea to double-check with your employer before assuming they have everything you need. If you’re planning on setting up your own shop, make sure you have all the gear necessary to get started.

2. Cosmetology license

In the United States, you need a cosmetology license to work as a barber. The requirements for this vary from state to state but in general, you need to complete a cosmetology program and pass an exam. Once you have your license, you’ll be able to work in any barbershop in your state.

If you’re planning on moving to another state, you may need to obtain a new license. It’s always best to check with the requirements of the state you plan on working in before making any decisions. If you’re planning on setting up your own shop, make sure you have the proper business licenses and permits in place.

.

3. The right attitude

Working as a barber requires a lot of people skills. You’ll be dealing with customers on a daily basis so it’s important to have a good attitude. You should be patient, friendly and professional at all times.

Be ready to deal with difficult situations, such as angry customers. If you don’t think you have the right personality for the job, it’s probably best to consider a different career path. Barbers are often required to work long hours so you should be prepared for that, as well.

.

4. Physical stamina

Barbering can be a physically demanding job. You’ll be on your feet for long periods of time. If you have any physical limitations, it’s important to let your employer know before starting the job so they can make accommodations for you as needed.

.

5. Good work ethic

As with any job, having a good work ethic is important. This means showing up on time, being prepared for your shift and putting in a full day’s work. If you’re not a team player, working as a barber might not be the right job for you.

You must be able to handle criticism and rejection. Not every customer is going to want to use your services and that’s okay. If a customer is unhappy with your work, take constructive feedback and use it to improve your skills.

.

6. Willingness to learn

Barbering is a skilled trade. It takes time to master the craft. You may not be very good at it first. That’s okay. With time and practice, you’ll get better. Be patient and willing to learn new techniques. The world of barbering is always changing, so it’s important to be able to stay up-to-date on trends and adapt to them.

Be ready to teach others, too. As you become more experienced, you’ll likely be called upon to train new barbers.
